HU-001C Handheld Game Machine
An '80s-style handheld game machine, soldered, assembled, and debugged from a kit.
DETAILS
A DIY handheld gaming system built from the HU-001C Funny Game Machine kit. A programmed STC15F2K60S2 microcontroller reads five push buttons and drives an LED dot-matrix display, a three-digit numeric display, and a buzzer to run several retro-style games. Members identified parts, read the supplied circuit references, soldered the board, fit the clear case, and tested the finished system. The club assembled and tested an existing kit; PCB design and game firmware were outside this build's scope.
CONCEPTS
- Soldering technique
- Plated through-holes
- Rework
- Polarity & orientation
- Systematic testing
| MICROCONTROLLER | STC15F2K60S2 |
|---|---|
| INPUTS | 5 push buttons |
| OUTPUTS | LED dot matrix, 3-digit display, buzzer |
| POWER | AAA battery pack (micro-USB socket included) |
- Step 1: Identify components and check resistor value, IC socket notch, transistor orientation, and capacitor polarity
- Step 2: Assemble the battery holder and connect power leads with correct polarity
- Step 3: Solder the core components, then the buttons, buzzer, matrix sections, and numeric display
- Step 4: Solder the micro-USB connector and IC socket, then seat the microcontroller and button caps
- Step 5: Close the clear case, install batteries, and test controls, display, game switching, and sound
- Excess solder risking bridges: reheated, desoldered, and re-soldered with less
- Incomplete through-hole joints: reflowed, reworking from the other side where needed
- Battery pack initially missed: added afterward, matching polarity to PCB markings
- Intermittent power: battery contact clips extended slightly for firmer contact
